With New Military Power Supply Family

New 200-Watt AC-DC switchers extend Abbott’s military power supply offering

for extreme environments to accommodate condensing atmospheres

without increasing unit weight.

Sun Valley, CA, September 27,  2011 – Abbott Technologies Inc. has extended their successful AM military power supply product line, and now offers a family of AC-DC switchers that can withstand condensing and other extreme environments.   The new products, designated the AM200EC family, employ innovative light-weight circuit board coatings and desiccants to handle condensing atmospheres involving high humidity and low temperatures.

According to Ralph Livingstone, Chief Engineer at Abbott, “The traditional solution for handling condensing atmospheres has involved potting the power supply by filling its case with a non-conductive thermo-plastic material.  This can add significant weight to each unit – often a severe design penalty in military systems that fly or are mobile.  Our AM200EC family achieves the same environmental isolation to protect the electronic circuits from moisture without a gram of weight increase.”

Abbott AM200EC military power supplies can operate from single phase inputs ranging from 95 to 260 VAC at line frequencies from 47 to 880 Hz.  All input sections include built-in power factor correction, meet MIL-STD-1399 Section 300 requirements for spike voltage testing and provide line regulation of ±1 percent.  Output voltage can be specified from 12 to 48 VDC, and achieve load regulation of ±1 percent from no load to full load.  Standard operating temperature range is from -40º to -70ºC base plate with no de-rating, while ripple and noise are less than 2 percent peak-to-peak over a 20MHz bandwidth.  Extended temperature range models are available.

Each unit includes a range of features expected in every Abbott military power supply.  These include short circuit protection with current limiting, in-rush current limiting, remote error sensing, and built-in test functions.  Calculated MTBF is 109,000 hours per MIL-HDBK-217F in a naval sheltered environment, while electromagnetic compatibility meets the CE101 and CE102 requirements of MIL-STD-461F.  All versions can meet shock specifications for MIL-S-901, and vibration specs for MIL-STD-167.  Nominal size is 3.5 x 6.6 x 1.25 in. and weight is less than 2 pounds.
